Schoolhouse by the Great Wall
If you are going to the Great Wall at Mutianyu, make your lunch stop at this little gem of a restaurant: Schoolhouse by the Great Wall.
It is an actual refurbished schoolhouse. The former classrooms are dining rooms complete with blackboards at the front and displayboards on the walls hung with the artistic efforts of previous diners.
You'll undoubtedly be greeted by a cheery "Hi there, and Welcome," from the genial host American Jim Spear or his wife. This entrepreneurial couple have created something special here employing young local talent and using only the freshest seasonal produce. The menu is creative but features familiar favourites. We had a hearty pasta with ragout which was what we needed after our steep walk on the wall. We did notice another diner have delicious looking hamburger though. The salad we had was fresh and flavoursome due to the addition of fresh herbs. The desserts were hard to resist too.......... Apple Betty with home made ice cream.........mmmm and big enough for two!
The toilets are spotless ( and European!) and there's also a lovely hand made glass gallery. All in all a place not to be missed.
