Known as the Water Cube, the National Aquatic Center is the site of the aquatic games at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing China. With three pools under one big roof, the Water Cube will seat about 17,000 people for the 2008 Olympic Games. It has all the latest technology in place to put it among the fastest pools in the world.

Located next to the Beijing National Stadium in the Olympic Green, it is a steel frame covered with a membrane composed of energy-efficient ETFE, a plastic-like material. The Water Cube has more than 4,000 bubbles, the largest of which is 9m in diameter. Conceptually the square box and the interior spaces are carved out of an undefined cluster of foam bubbles, symbolizing a condition of nature that is transformed into a condition of culture. The overall appearance of the aquatic centre is a cube of water molecules.

Post – Games Uses

During the 2008 Olympic Games, the National Aquatics Center hosted swimming, diving, and synchronized swimming competitions. After the Games, the Water Cube turns into the international advanced center of swimming, sports, health-building services, and leisure activities.

The National Aquatics Center has temporary closed since October 2009. In 2010, the National Aquatics Center will reopen.

Location: located in the Olympic Green, to the west of Beijing National Stadium
Opening Hours: 09:00 – 19:00 from Monday to Thursday; 09:00 – 17:00 from Friday to Sunday

How to get there

Subway: Subway line 8 (Olympic Special Line): get off at Olympic Sports Center Station, and get off from Exit B1 or B2 and walk north.


  1. Take bus no. 82, 538 or 611 and get off at National Stadium East Station.
  2. Take bus no. 18, 108, 124, 207, 328, 380, 387, 409, 426, 558, 653, 694, 758, 803, 849, 985 or 特2 and get off at National Olympic Sports Center East Gate Station.
  3. Take bus no. 84 or 407 and get off at National Olympic Sports Center West Gate Station.

Weather/Best Time to Go

Beijing enjoys four distinctive seasons owning to its humid continental climate, ranging from very warm during the summer: 28ºC to 38ºC (82ºF to 93ºF), to chilly and dry during the winter: -10ºC to 10ºC (14ºF to 50ºF).

Travel Tips

  • You are suggested to tour the sightseeing nearby together, including, the National Aquatics Center, the National Indoor Stadium, etc.
  • There will be many sound and light shows during the summer, such as the Swan Lake ballet shows, etc. 
  • You can swim for two hours in the pools, which will charge another $8.
  • Security check is needed at the entrance. Cigarette lighters and other things of possible danger are prohibitted to take in.
