Yuyongguan Great Wall, about 60 kilometers from Beijing downtown, can be easily visited in the northeast of Changping District. Meandering along the precipitous mountains, the Juyonguan Great Wall is made in various shapes, among which the most famous is the unique shape resembling '人'. It has been listed as the World Heritage Directory in 1987, which is a national cultural protection unit.

Connected with the Badaling Great Wall in the north, this section of the Great Wall is featured by the grand Juyongguan Pass which is one of the three great passes of the Great Wall of China (the other two passes are Jiayuguan and Shanhaiguan). In fact, there are two passes in Juyongguan Great Wall, one to the south and one to the north. The southern one is what we now call Juyongguan and the northern one is Badaling.

Juyongguan Pass has long been a military stronghold, serving as a natural barrier to the invaders. Many fierce battles were fought here in the ancient times. Besides, the Juyongguan Great Wall is also a gorgeous scenic spot, beautiful flowers and lush trees dotting the mountains. A splendid picture! As early as the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234), it was named as one of the eight best scenery of Beijing.

Weather/Best Time to Go

Amazing Beijing enjoys different features for its clear distinction of four seasons, characterized by a long hot summer, long chilly winter, and shorter spring and autumn. The hottest month in Beijing is July and coldest is January. Considering the frequent sandstorms in spring, September and October with their pleasant weather are considered the best visiting times.

Summer and Autumn are the best seasons to climb up the Juyongguan Great Wall, when there are fair weather and the scenery is the most beautiful and attractive. However, if you have to arrange your Beijing tour in winter or spring, there is also no problem, because there are handrails located throughout this section, safe and secured.

Travel Tips

  • Do not go to the Great Wall in bad weather (heavy rain, storm or thunderstorm); pay attention to the Beijing weather forecast.
  • You should be ready to climb rough rocks and steep cliffs.
  • Climbing along the wall itself was strenuous – a steep ascent on irregularly spaced steps. A challenge for you!
  • Dress for hiking. Choose comfortable footwear with good grip and support for the feet.
