About  798 Art Zone ( District)

798 Space is the biggest part of 798 Art Zone ( District)which located in the Dashanzi area, to the northeast of central Beijing. It is the site of state-owned factories including Factory 798, which originally produced electronics.

Beginning in 2002, artists and cultural organizations began to divide, rent out, and re-make the factory spaces, gradually developing them into galleries, art centers, artists' studios, design companies, restaurants, and bars.

It became a "Soho-esque" area of international character, replete with "loft living," attracting attention from all around. Bringing together contemporary art, architecture, and culture with a historically interesting location and an urban lifestyle, "798" has evolved into a cultural concept, of interest to experts and normal folk alike, influential on our concepts of both urban culture and living space.

Nowadays, 798 Space or 798 Art Zone has become a popular attraction for many visitors at home and abroad. Visitors not only enjoy the unique old factory style, but also cultural, artistic and commercial activities held at 798 Art Zone.

Weather/Best Time to Go

Generally speaking, you can enjoy yourself in 798 Space in every season.  But the autumn months between September and November have the best weather . Summer (June to August) is considered peak season, when hotels typically raise their rates and the Great Wall nearly collapses under the weight of marching tourists. Spring is less pleasant not many tourists but lots of wind and dust. In winter, you'll have Beijing to yourself and many hotels offer substantial discounts, just remember it's an ice box outside. Everything is chock block during the Chinese New Year (usually in January or February).

Travel tips:

  • You'd better be interested in art or history or have learned something about them before you visit.
  • The Dashazi compound is immensely walkable; keep in mind this is solely a pedestrian affair unless you arrive by private car. Cabs are not allowed to enter the complex and you wil be required to disembark at any of the entrance gates.
  • Avoid the area on Mondays, when many of the galleries are closed.
