Beijing Roast Duck & Most Popular Duck Restaurants

Peking Duck has been reputated as the most delicious food Beijing has to offer. Someone thinks it a little bit greasy, but others get hooked after just one taste. In any condition, a Peking Duck dinner is usually a fixed item on any Beijing tour schedule.

There are many roast duck restaurants in Beijing, but Quan Ju De, Bianyi Fang, Da Dong, Li Qun and King Duck are the best.

There are many roast duck restaurants, but the most popular and famous are listed as the following:

1. Quanjude (全聚德)

The well-known All-Duck Banquet is headed by Quanjude roast duck and supported by over 400 dishes with Quanjude characteristic flavor. Government leaders, officials and VIPs from nearly 200 countries and regions have visited Quanjude roast duck restaurants and had dinner here. Foreign credit cards are accepted here. 2. Bianyifang Roast Duck Restaurant (便宜坊)

The oldest duck house in the capital, Bianyifang first began roasting ducks during the Jiajing period (1522-1566). The ducks are roasted in a closed-door oven, known in Chinese as menlu kaoya; other duck houses use an open-fire oven. Bianyifang is a drab state-run eatery with the service we've come to expect from such businesses, but it remains popular with old Beijing families. On the positive side, the ducks are roasted to a perfect and appetizing brown and they are scrumptious. A whole duck costs 168RMB.

3. Da Dong Roast Duck Restaurant (大董烤鸭)

Da Dong is many a Beijinger's go-to choice for delicious Beijing duck (kao ya). They wisely listened to the market: people that don't like Beijing duck, normally complain that it is too fatty or oily, so Da Dong created a special variety of super lean Beijing duck (198RMB+8RMB/person+10%) that has garnered rave reviews. Wait staff really concentrate on holistic duck experience, taking the time to show patrons several ways to consume the delicacy.

4. Li Qun Peking Roast Duck Restaurant (利群烤鸭)

This family-run eatery is operated in the Li's own little courtyard house, hidden deep in a hutong neighborhood. The venue may be a bit run-down, but it certainly has character, and it's a real hutong experience. Li Qun’s ducks are tasty, roasted to perfection to retain some fat, and the meat is moist and the skin crispy. A whole duck costs 138RMB including condiments.

5. Duck King (烤鸭王)

Ya Wang, or Duck King, is conveniently located in the middle of the Jianguomen diplomatic area, with several other branches situated conveniently around the city. The original roast duck costs 128RMB, with an additional 3RMB charged for condiments and 12RMB/0.5kg for pancakes. For 198RMB you can sample the yiya sanchi, or three-ways of eating one duck, which includes the traditional duck wrapped in pancakes with condiments, stir-fried dark duck meat, and duck soup. The emperor grade duck sells for 388RMB--staff says this imperialist duck dines on a better feed than his less well-bred cousins.
