Chengdu Climate and Weather & Travel Tips

Chengdu is located on the edge of the fertile plains of the Red Basin in China’s Sichuan Province. It has its own unique climate features.

The words “Mild, humid and fog” are known as the synonym for Chengdu climate. Each year, Chengdu gets about 250-300 foggy, cloudy or rainy days. In a year, Chengdu has distinct seasons: long and warm spring, short and sultry summer, cool and rainy autumn, cold and foggy winter.

What Time is Right for You to Travel in Chengdu?

Chengdu enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate and also a typical basin climate due to its distinctive location. Usually the spring comes very early and spring flowers are blossoming just after the Chinese New Year Festival. And autumn is cool and refreshing. Therefore, the spring and autumn are commonly very pleasant and best season for traveling. However, different seasons have their particular sceneries, and you can come Chengdu depending on your prefer.

Spring - long and warm

Spring in Chengdu usually comes early from the end of February and lasts long until middle May. The climate gradually warms up from winter. The temperature will range from 15°C- 25°C, but it frequently changes. Sometime you will feel chilly in spring.

As the temperature rise, colorful flowers are blooming one after another, and trees and grass are turning green under the spring wind. The best place to see the peach blossom is at Longquan Mountain; the pear blossom at Xinjin County; the peony at Danjing Mountain; and the cuckoo at Wawu Mountain.

Summer – short and sultry

Summer of Chengdu, starting from mid May to the end of August, is the hottest in a year. Hot and rainy are the features of summer. The temperature in this season will rise 38°C in the daytime, but in early morning it is sultry with lower temperature. It is necessary to take a thin overcoat and rain gear for your trip.

If you want to escape the sultry of Chengdu downtown, you can visit Qincheng Mountain, Siguniang Mountain and Jiulong Valley, where are ideal place close to the city. Moreover, at this time, Giant Panda is the most active.

Autumn – cool and rainy

Autumn of Chengdu, from September to the end of October or early November, is a rainy season. But it is one of the best seasons of a year to visit Chengdu, especially outside Chengdu, such as Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong. The temperature in the season frequently changes. The average low will be 15°C and the high be 21°C. A few chilly days could be followed by relatively hot weather. Before a trip, prepare shirt, sweater and jacket to cope with the weather changing.

Winter – cold and foggy

Winter in Chengdu is from December to February. The average temperature is about 5°C. At this time, Chengdu has the least days of sunshine in China, and most time is cloudy and overcast. Due to the clouds and moist weather, we will feel very cold.

If you are a skiing lover, this time is the best to travel Chengdu. Chengdu has a Xiling Snow-capped Mountain resort which is famous for largest resort in western China. It is located in the western part of Chengdu, around 95km away from Chengdu downtown. Prepare sweater and down jacket for your winter Chengdu winter.
