"From Jan. 1st, 2014, the Forbidden City will be closed on every Monday, except the public holidays and the summer vacation form July 1 to Aug.31, for the renovation and maintenance of the ancient palace architecture and the cultural relics." said a museum spokesman.
Located in the heart of Beijing, the Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, was home to China's emperors and was the highest center of power for about 500 years. It attracts more than 14 million visitors every year.
In order to protect the the ancient buildings and cultural relics, the administrator of the Palace Museum Museum decided to close the Forbidden City on Mondays since Jan 1st, 2014, except Chinese public holidays and summer vacation.
