Chongqing began offering 72-hour Visa-free Transit stays for citizens from 45 countries on December 30, 2013 and became the 5th city visa-free city in China, following Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu.
Chongqing is a city in southwest China directly administered by the central government. It carries out this policy arming at boosting the local economy and tourism.
As the words of Ai Yang who is the deputy secretary-general of the Chongqing government, "The policy will increase cooperation between Chongqing and foreign countries, boosting tourism, commerce and cultural exchanges." He sees the policy as an opportunity for Chongqing to develop local tourism, commerce, culture, exhibitions and air travel.
From November, visitors eligible for visa-free stays must have air tickets to a third country with confirmed dates and seats, and visa where required.
Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport will provide services including currency exchange and travel advice at the international terminal for the convenience of passengers.
