Located at the center of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Lhasa has an altitude of 3,650 meters (11,920 ft). While an altitude above 8,000 ft is defined sa high altitude. When people get to this height, they will probably suffer the Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), or high altitude illness. It is a pathological condition at high altitude which is caused by the reduced air pressure and lack of oxygen.
1. Dizziness or Headache;2. Shortness of breath with exertion;3. Hyperventilation (fast breathing);4. Rapid pulse (heart rate); 5. Nausea or vomiting; 6. Fatigue; 7. Loss of appetite; 8. Poor sleeping
1. Ask some notes from person who have been to Lhasa or other highlands to aviod being nervous.2. Stop smoking to prevent respiratory tract infection.3. Take American ginseng properly to strengthen the hypoxia resistance. 4. A medical examination is necessary if you've never been to plateaus.
1. When just arriving the plateau, everyone will feel a little difficult in breathing. But this dosen't mean you are suffering AMS. If you can take care of yourself rightly, it will disappear after 2 to 3 days.2. Avoid brisk walking or running immediately after your arrival, especially if you arrive by air. The best way is to eat some and have a rest.3. Don't take in oxygen if you are just have light symptons! 4. Eat high-carbohydrate food. Drink more water, fruit and vegetable to maintain moisture.5. Avoid overtired and keep your diet and daily life regular.6. Don't take shower at the first day! Avoid catching cold!7. If your symptoms become worse and worse, please take oxygen and go to hospital.8. If you begin feeling bad, stop move higher and if it going to worse, you need to go lower.9. The basic advice is keep yourself relaxed.
