a shopping center has replaced the infamous original outdoor Xiushui Market.

The Silk Street (also Xiushui Market) attracts approximately 20,000 visitors daily (from 9am to 9pm) on weekdays and between 50,000 and 60,000 on weekends as of 2006.

This 35,000-square-meter complex houses 1,700 retail vendors and over 3,000 salespeople spread over seven floors with three levels of basements.

Many of the stalls have, over the years, gained local and international reputation for selling counterfeit luxury designer brands at relatively-low prices.

Rolls of silk
Numerous rolls of Chinese silk for your choice. Just come here to pick up some for your friends and family.

Some have carried on this trademark despite growing pressures from the management, the Chinese government and famous brand-name companies.

Location: just east Jianguomenwai Dajie; tightly near CBD; directly above Yong’an Li subway station
Opening Hours: 9:00am – 9:00pm;

How to get there ?

The Xiu Shui street mall is located along Chang An avenue near the Yong An Li line 1 subway station. You can now walk directly from the subway into the mall via an underground passageway without stepping outside into the scorching heat of summer or the terrible cold of winter. Alternatively you can take a taxi using the Chinese name shown.

What to Buy in Silk Market ?

Opened on March 19, 2005, and replacing the old alley-based Xiushui Market, the current Silk Street establishment has diversified their business scope.

Silk Costume
This is a traditional Chinese costume made in Chinese silk. Just come to touch it and feel its softness.

In addition to selling fashion apparels and accessories such as hats, handbags, shoes, belts, sportswear and silk fabrics like their predecessor, the new Silk Street has introduced traditional Chinese handicrafts, antiques, calligraphy, carpets, table cloths, bed coverings, paintings, hand-knit dresses, toys, electronic gadgets, trinkets, and fine jewelry.

electronic stuffs
There are also the electronic products such as DVDs, MP3, watches, etc, just like the Hongqiao Market.

Reputable establishments such as the Tongrentang Pharmacy, Quanjude Peking Roast Duck restaurant, and multi-national coffee and restaurant chains such as Lavazza, SPR Coffee, Caffe L'affare, Subway and TCBY have also joined Silk Street's bid to become the "ultimate one-stop tourist destination" in Beijing.

Virtual Shopping in Silk Market

Silk market carries just about anything you could imagine. mostly knock off stuff, clothing, bags, watches ect. it is the largest silk/pearl market in Beijing, and you can usually find some pretty good stuff here...

Quilt
The quilt made by the Chinese silk is comfortable and good to your skin.

Be warned though if you look foreign, it's better to have a local friend come with you, i've bargained for a string of pears, got asked for about 85, talked it down to about 50, still though it was too expensive (aiming for like 30 rmb) then when walking away, heard them tell a foreigner that the same string of pearls were 300 RMB.

shop assistants
The shop assistants in Silk Market are very warm-hearted and talktive. You can bargain with them.

They can get very greedy, esp on the weekends when the place is flooded with people.

I hear a good day to go is the day before Christmas eve? the place according to my friend was deserted and it was very easy to talk prices down.

tailors of Silk Market
Custom a clothes in the tailor shops of Silk Market. They are so professional.

Knocked-off bags, clothing, jewelry, beijing souvenirs, electronic appliances ect...

Depends on the quality of the item, just remember pay whatever you feel the item is worth, but check that it is not damaged before you pay!
