Hong Kong is located in the South China Sea and at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta. It has an oceanic subtropical monsoon climate with distinct four seasons: warm and humid spring, hot and rainy summer, pleasant and sunny autumn, cool and dry winter. The only predictable weather events that could have a significant on your travel plans are typhoons.

What Time is Right for Your Trip in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong has an average annual temperature of 23℃. It is unusual for the lowest temperatures to drop below 10℃ in urban areas. February is the coldest month, but the average temperature is 16℃. March and April are very pleasant, but there are influence of high humidity, fog and drizzle. The months from May to August are hot and humid with occasional showers and thunderstorms, and the highest temperatures often exceed 31℃. Typhoons come in September.

The ideal tour season is late autumn, around from October to Christmas time. The duration is cool and dry with plenty of sunshine. It is good season for you to travel Hong Kong. However, different seasons, different landscapes. Choose one season you prefer to travel Hong Kong.

Spring - warm and humid

Spring in Hong Kong is from March to May. The average temperature is around 20℃. The temperature and humidity are rising, and evening may be cool. In March and April, there are spells of high humidity, fog and drizzle. Sometimes flight and ferry services are occasionally disrupted because of reduced visibility.

Remember to take a light overcoat, a sweater and rainwear for the inscrutable weather.

Summer – hot and rainy

The months from June to September are the summer of Hong Kong. The season is hot and humid with occasional showers and thunderstorms, particularly during the mornings. Afternoon temperatures often exceed 31℃, while temperatures generally remain around 26℃ with high humidity.

From July to September, Hong Kong is most likely to be affected by tropical cyclones which may last for a few days and bring a large amount of rain. Sometimes landslips and flooding were caused.

An umbrella, light weight cotton shorts and dresses are necessaries. This is the tourism discount season. If you come here at this time, remember to participate in the aquatic activities in Ocean Park and Disneyland.

Autumn – pleasant and sunny

Hong Kong's summer is from late September to the end of November. This is the ideal season to travel in Hong Kong. The weather is cool, dry and plenty of sunshine. It's rather comfortable to stroll along the wide and charming Victoria Bay or go on an excursion to Lamma Island or Lantau Island.

If you stay in the urban city, you may just wear short-sleeved shirts or T-shirts plus a thin overcoat for temperature change.

Winter – cool and dry

Winter, usually from December to February, is cool and dry. The average temperature is about 16℃. It may be noticeably cooler than the seasons, but it is mild. Snow is unheard of in Hong Kong. It is an ideal time to do shopping because many stores, markets will make sales for out-of-season clothes.

Sweaters will be needed for most days and a light jacket or coat for evenings. Gloves and scarves are only needed by those who plan to stand in the freezer section of the supermarket for the duration of their holiday.

* During April and October, booking hotels in Hong Kong is different, due to expositions and conventions.
* Hong Kong Horse Races are usually held between September and the next June. This will attract many visitors from home and abroad.
