Guilin Transportation: get to & around Guilin

Guilin is a world famous tourist city. It has a perfect transportation system that allows travelers to conveniently get around in Guilin.

It is also conveniently connected to over 100 domestic and international airports. There are many ways to get to Guilin: by air, train and bus are available from all the Chinese popular tourist destinations and abroad.

How to Get Around in Guilin?

1. By Taxi

Taking taxi for your traveling in Guilin is the easiest way. Guilin city has many taxis running on the road. The drivers are always gracious to take you anywhere and happy to give advice to you the Guilin travel tips. The minimum fare is RMB 9 which is about $1.5 and RMB 1.6 for each additional kilometer. It is hard to run up a fare above $5 unless you are going well outside the city, such as a trip to the airport.

From the airport to midtown:

There are many taxis for your choice. The fare is about RMB 80.

Note:

Many Guilin's taxi drivers do not speak English and you will need to have your destination written in Chinese Pinyin on a paper before entering the tab in order to avoid misunderstandings.

2. By Public Bus

If you just want to make a trip a destination in downtown Guilin, using the extensive public transportation system is the best choice. The buses run frequently and cost RMB 1-2 per person per ride depending on the type of bus ( regular buses are RMB 1 and double-deckers are RMB 2).

There are also eight free bus lines (numbers 51 to 58) which serve major tourist destinations. The buses operate from 7:00am to 7:00pm every day. This is a popular service, so the buses can get very crowded between 9 am and 5 pm.

From the airport to midtown:

In the center of city, the bus leaves for the airport every 30 minutes from 6:30 – 20:00. Remember to take the bus 2 hours before your flight departure.

3. By Bike

Guilin's compact layout makes bicycle touring an attractive option. It offers you the chance to stop where you would like, for as long as you want. Bicycles can be rented by the hour or the day at most hotels and at other locations around the city, especially Zhongshan South Road. The daily rate is approximately RMB 15, with a deposit of RMB 100-300.

4. By Water

In Guilin there are two main docks for passenger transport service.

One is Mopanshan Passenger Transport Dock which is near Mopanshan Mountain, 28 kilometers (about 17 miles) from Guilin's downtown area. This dock is designed to look like a beautiful garden and has well-equipped establishments including five waiting halls. In the city center, there is no public bus to the dock, so you have to spend approximately RMB 60 for a taxi to reach this dock.

Another dock is Zhujiang Dock which is 32 kilometers (about 20 miles) southeast of the city center and two-kilometers (about 1.2 miles) by waterway from Mopanshan Dock. Zhujiang Dock is 400 meters (about 0.25 miles) long and has nine berths, a big waiting building, and a parking lot. This dock is mainly designed for foreign tourists and is the must-use dock for high officials from both China and foreign countries.

How to Get to Guilin?

1. By Air

There are over 30 domestic cities and 8 international airlines from Guilin Liangjiang International Airport, 30 kilometers away from the midtown Guilin.

The major domestic cities: Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Guiyang, Kunming, Chongqing, Wuhan and Hong Kong…

2. By Train

There are two railway stations in Guilin.

Guilin Railway Station ( Guilin Station or Guilin South Station ) is now the main train station and situated on South Zhongshan Road. It is a transportation hub in the city.

The other one is Guilin North Railway Station, departing trains are infrequent. The sleeper train tickets for the northern cities are difficult to buy, but it is quite easy to buy the tickets within Guangxi province to Nanning (provincial capital city) and Liuzhou.

There are trains to Guilin from Beijing, Changsha, Wuhan, Shanghai, Xian and Harbin and Qingdao in the north; Kunming and Guizhou in the west; Liuzhou, Nanning, Beihai and Zhanjiang in the south; Guangzhou and Shenzhen in the east.

3. By Long-distance Bus

There are three bus stations in Guilin.

Guilin Bus Station (located on Zhongshan South Road, the main passengers’ station), mainly providing buses to other cities in China.

Guilin South Bus Station (located in front of the Guilin Train Station), mainly provides services to Yangshuo and Yanshan County.

Guilin North Gate Station (located on Zhongshan North Road, mainly going to the northern county of Xing’an and Lingchuan). Guilin bus station is the largest bus terminal in Guilin. Tickets can purchase at ticket office of Guilin Bus station, and tickets can also be bought from the conductor on the bus.

The provincial express bus to Liuzhou, Nanning take about 4.5 hours and operates at every 30 minutes. Sleeper buses travel from Beihai, Qinzhou, Yulin and Wuzhou to Guilin.

There are also many direct luxurious buses from Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Chongqing, Hunan, Fujian, Zhejiang and Jiangxi.

4. By Boat

The picturesque Li River in Guilin connects through Xiang River in Hunan province and Zhujiang River in Guangdong Province. You can get to Guilin by cargo boat from Guangzhou via Wuzhou, but there are no passenger boats operate to Guilin.
