Guilin Climate and Weather & Travel Tips

When you travel in & around Guilin, one of the biggest questions on Guilin travel is when the best time to plan your tour is.

Which Season is Right for You?

Guilin is located in the subtropical region, processes a mild climate with sufficient rainfall. The yearly average temperature in Guilin is 20°C (68°F). August is the hottest month with an average temperature at 28°C (82°F), while the coldest months are January and February with an average temperature at 8°C (46°F).

Guilin’s rain season is March to June. The mountain and river sceneries become especially picturesque after rains, however tourists are recommended to carry an umbrella or raincoat all time when visiting Guilin during the period.

Guilin weather has four distinctive seasons: sunny and wet spring, hot and rainy summer, cool and pleasant autumn, breezy and drizzling winter. All kinds of flowers blossom all year round.

Spring – Sunny and Wet

Spring, from early March to middle April, is a popular time for your Guilin travel because the weather is mostly sunny and the days are getting longer. Spring is also the time of year when the nature in Guilin starts to come back to life – colorful flowers and green willows compete with each other for beauty of look. It is good time to shoot beautiful pictures of landscape of Guilin.

Guilin is a very wet city; an umbrella is a must when you go outside for traveling. Sometimes, there are spring drizzles, but something lighter like T-shirts with a raincoat will be comfortable.

Summer – Hot and Rainy

Guilin's summer, from late April to mid-August, is a rainy season especially in May and June. The rainfall in summer reaches up to 13 inches, making up over 50% of the total rainfall per year. Always remember to bring an umbrella and good rain gear with you if you go there at this time. However, visiting there in rain and fog may make you feel as graceful as a fairy. It would be a great pity if you haven't enjoyed the misty rain of Li River during your Guilin travel.

T-shirts with skirts, shorts or slacks are the best choice for summer when the temperature can be rather high. It would be wise to bring sun block with you, some medicine to prevent heatstroke and insect repellant Local herbal tea also helps travelers to become accustomed to the local weather and water.

For climbers and hikers of Guilin Adventure travel, need to remember to be careful of your every step because anywhere is slippery in frequent rain season. Good seasons for them are in early spring, autumn or winter when it is drier and easier to climb.

Golden Autumn - Cool and pleasant autumn

Autumn, usually from late August to the end of October, is the golden season to visit Guilin. At this period of time, it is mostly clear and cool, and the water in the Li River is as smooth as a glass. So it is a best time to enjoy the reflections of the mountains. Comfortable, casual and light clothes such as long-sleeved T-shirts or shirts plus thin jackets would be enough.

The other benefit is that there are fewer travelers during this season and you will not be conditioned by the transportation and accommodation. Moreover, it is a good time to go Longji and see golden Terrace Field.

Winter – Breezy, Drizzling but Crowed

Winter in Guilin is from November to February when the whole city is covered with blossoming sweet-scented osmanthus giving off its fragrance everywhere. Usually, this time is crowed for Guilin travelers because Guilin attracts a lot of Chinese tourists during the Spring Festival holiday from January to February.

Traveling there in winter, you just have to take some spring and autumn clothes with one or two lightweight winter wear like thermal underwear and woolen sweaters. Snow is rare in that city, but there is the chance to enjoy the winter snow in or on the top of the mountains around the city during the coldest time.

One of the biggest advantage of travelling during winter is that you will not feel too hot while you pedaling through the countryside on your bicycle. Winter is also the driest of Guilin's four seasons, there is less mud, making it is easier to climb mountains without slipping and sliding for outside adventure.
