1. Chen Clan Academy ( Chen Jia Ci )

Also known as the "Chen Clan Temple", Chen Clan Academy is a unique complex and a fascinating monument to South China's culture...and to anyone from Guangdong Province with the common surname Chen. It was built in the late 19th century with funds gathered from Chens throughout Guangdong, the Chen Clan Academy served as a gathering place, hall of ancestral worship and school.

It's very easy to get to, cheap to get in, and an easy place to wander away an afternoon. In the great old family home, there are many excellent old buildings, a lot of art and wood sculptures which provide visitors with a vivid sense of what life was like in the latter years of the Qing Dynasty.

2. Shamian Island

Shamian Island is not a true island. Here was the site of the first foreign concession in China where France and England both set up shop on this sandy river island in 1859 toward the end of the Opium War. Now it is connected to the city by a lot of bridges.

It's hard to imagine that the pseudo-colonization of the Middle Kingdom began in such a tiny little place. The island has a ton of architecture from days past, and has a very different feel than the rest of the city. This is an absolute must for anyone coming to town. Right across the canal from the island there is a great traditional medicine market if you fancy buying any dried seahorses or turtle shells... or even if you just want to look around.

3. Baiyun Mountain

Baiyu Mountain is right outside town and offers a peaceful tourist sits to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, without actually leaving the city. It got its name from the fact that the sun shines comes after rain, a band of clouds circles the mountain.

On the summit of the mountain, you have excellent panoramic views of the city that really give you a sense of how massive it is. But to hike up to the highest point should take a little over an hour. If you choose to take the requisite cable car, it is so convenient. Temples, tea houses and lookouts will make sure you never feel alone in the wild, and the views of the city are great and somewhat comforting.

1. Haizhu Square

Haizhu Square has a ton of malls and shops that ware built in 1952. It is the only riverside square in Guangzhou. You will find all kinds of goods on sale: toys, souvenirs, electronics, dried food, household items, clothes, lamps, artificial flowers and much more. Remember to bargain.

2. Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street

The street is top one among all pedestrian streets in Guangzhou. It has developed its own business model of "Xiguan", which usually means "Western Guangzhou Culture". It has a long history, and there are good restaurants and hotels there such as Taotaoju Restaurant, Qingping Hotel and Yong'an Company.

3. Tianhe Computer City

At the corner of Tianhe Road and Tiyu East Road is the Grandview Mall, known as the monument to consumerism. Just its eastern part, there are several buildings housing computer markets. 4. Beijing Road Pedestrian Street

Beijing Road is located in the Guangzhou city center area. It is very easy to get to by taking the metro to the Gongyuan Qian Station. This pedestrian street is hundreds of meters long and is crammed with big and small shops. They sell almost everything imaginable. Remember to bargain for it. It gets really crowded on the weekends. You will be like a local.

1. Yuexiu Park

Yuexiu Park is the biggest park of mountains of Guangzhou. It belongs to the ending ranges of Baiyun Mountain. The Five Rams Statue, the symbol of Guangzhou, is one of the most famous sights in the park. There are a great many beautiful views and historical relics in the park, such as the River View Pagoda of Ming Dynasty, the Nanyue King's Tomb of Eastern Han and the Cannons of Qing Dynasty are also very famous. 2. Ersha Island

Ersha Island is in the Pearl River. On the island there are American International School of Guangzhou, several apartment complexes, a government sports training facility. You can get some great views of the city from here, or feel like you are on a whole other world in the interior. The island also has some very nice cafes, the Opera House, and some new museums, etc.

3. South China Normal University Campus

When you enter into the campus of SCNU, you will find it is hardly the ancient architectural wonder of Oxford or Harvard, but it is still has a nice cultural atmosphere. The buildings leave a lot to be desired, but the paths and lakes that go through the campus are a nice place to wander through. It is also easily accessible by Tianhe Road.
