Guangzhou Climate and Weather & Travel Tips

Guangzhou is known for the host city of Canton Fair, which is hold in spring from mid April to early May, and in autumn from mid October to early November. Both are in the good time and comfortable season of a year in Guangzhou. If you are planning travel in Guangzhou, you also have a good opportunity to enjoy the landscapes of Guangzhou City.

When is Right Time for You to Travel in Guangzhou?

Situated on the southeast coast of China, Guangzhou has the subtropical monsoon climate with an average year-round temperature of 20-22℃. Spring in Guangzhou is rainy and wet, summer is muggy and sometimes bothered with typhoon, autumn is cool and comfortable, while mild and dry in winter.

The summer is so long with large amount of rainfall between April and August. The annual precipitation is around 639-748 inches. Taking advantage of plentiful rainfall and heat, Guangzhou earns the fame of being "A City of Flowers" and becomes an evergreen and colorful city with green tree and flowers bloom all the year round, presenting a scene of prosperity. Spring - rainy and wet

Spring in Guangzhou, from late February to mid-May, is a rainy season. The city of Guangzhou is soaked by continuous plum rains around the turn of March and April when Guangzhou locals must use dehumidifiers against the wetness. If you are coming for the spring Canton Fair from April to May, an umbrella is a must.

In spite of the plum rain, spring is the best time to see the kapok which is the official flower of Guangzhou city.

Summer – muggy and typhoon

Summer of Guangzhou is usually from late May to October. It is a hot season with the average temperature of 30ºC. The hottest months are July and August when the highest temperature often up to 40ºC. Especially, there are occasional typhoons and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so it isn't recommended to travel Guangzhou in the summer. If you plan to visit Guangzhou in the time, water sport is something you cannot miss.

For summer in Guangzhou, you should wear summer clothes such as shorts, shirts and skirts, and also sun protection such as hats, sunglasses and sun block. Besides drinking lots of water, you can also try drinking herbal tea, which is very popular among local people.

Autumn – cool and comfortable

Autumn, from mid October to December, is the best time to visit Guangzhou when the weather is pleasantly cool and the sky is bright and clear. The average low and high temperatures are respectively 20°C (68°F) and 28°C (83°F) in October, 16°C (60°F) and 24°C (75°F) in November, and 11°C (52°F) and 20°C (68°F) in December.

If you are planning to participate in autumn Canton Fair, you have a smart choice to know about more about Guangzhou city in a good season. However, it is hard to find a good hotel in the time. Remember to book your accommodation at least a month before your starting off.

A light sweater and a coat is enough at the coolest of times, but a long-sleeve shirt is enough when it is warmer during the day.

Winter – mild and dry

Winter is so short, from late December to February. The weather is moderate, cool and dry. It is one of the best times of the year for visiting Guangzhou. Different from the cities in North China, Guangzhou in winter is a sea of flowers, especially ideal for the flower lovers to visit.

The coldest months are from January and February. Remember to take long trousers, a sweater and sometimes a coat when visiting Guangzhou in winter.
