Chinese New Year Taboos

Culture is something which exists in every country. Ancient Chinese utilize a lot of lucky words and signs to express their admirations for good fortune and a good life. These lucky words and signs also come with taboos attached to them.

Although these taboos attached to Chinese New Year, people of today may not believe it but these traditions are still kept for the continuation based on the following Dos and Don’ts of Chinese New Year  

Refrain from Bad words 

During the Chinese New Year, people are expected to refrain from saying anything bad, since bad word one may use is believe bring effect on him or her for the rest of the year. Word like “Si” “Four” in Chinese means “to die” so one must refrain from using the number four.

Sweeping

Sweeping the floor or dump the trash is believed to take away the wealth and luck from the entire household, so all brooms hidden during this day.

Eating

Foods such as rice porridge in the morning is not allowed since believe that only poor people eat rice porridge in the morning, so eating this kind of food in the morning will prevent you from getting rich. Also do not take meat in the morning because it said that the gods who arrives in the morning of the New Year festival, many of them are vegetarians. 

Washing or Cutting of Hair

Washing or cutting of hair on this day is prohibited, doing so means washing away all good luck for the coming year. On the other hand the use of knives and scissors may lead to cut of fortune.

Washing of Clothes

Chinese people do away with washing of clothes on the New Year day since it is the birthday of the god of water.  

White and Black Colours

In Chinese Culture, white and black colours symbolise death. So the recommended colours are red and gold since they bring about luck.  

Gifts

gift like clock means escorting some to the grave, green hats, pears, handkerchiefs, umbrellas, scissors or any shape object should not be given as a present.  

Handling with Care

Breakable items such as cup, plates, mirror must be handled with care. Since breaking it means a broken family or a death in the family.  

Shooting off Fire

This is a way of sending out the old year and welcoming in the coming year.On the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve every door in the house,and even windows, have to be open to allow the old year to go out.  

Lending of Money or Items

During this time nothing should be lent out as anyone who does so will be lending all the year.
