Hi Sharmini, from Hong Kong to Shanghai, you can either take the direct train or transfer in Guangzhou. For the direct train, it departs at 15:15 and arrives at 11:15 of the second day, and in 2015, the train (Z100 from Hong Kong to Shanghai) runs on even-numbered dates in January, April, May, August, November, December and on odd-numbered dates in February, March, June, July, September and October.

You can also transfer in Guangzhou, and it needs less time. Take the intercity train at the Hong Kong's Hung Hom station to Guangzhou East. The intercity train runs every hour or two taking around 1h58. Then transfer by metro or taxi from Guangzhou East to Guangzhou South. Then take the high-speed train there to Shanghai Hongqiao. There are 4 high-speed trains departing daily at 08:00, 11:23, 13:35 and 15:39, and taking about seven or eight hours.
